Two cultures, one heart | Niall Williams-Guthrie
For athletes, the jersey they wear can represent many things: hard work, sacrifice, community. For Niall Williams-Guthrie, pulling on the jersey of Fetu Samoa was about identity and leadership. It was more than a career decision, it was a declaration of who she is and pride in where she comes from.
Half Kiwi, half Samoan, Niall had the option to play for Kiwi Ferns in the 2023 Pacific Championships. Instead, she chose to represent her Samoan heritage on her father’s side, determined to honour her roots and inspire others to do the same.

“I said ‘Dad, I’m going to play for Samoa instead’ and it was the first time, I saw my father cry.”
Choosing to represent Samoa was about more than her own identity, it was also about creating a path and showing the way for other Afakasi’s (half Kiwi, half Samoan). Niall hopes to shift perceptions for the next generation of young athletes to see that representing their culture, especially those from smaller nations, is something to be proud of.
“I wanted to create that path and show the younger generation that it’s cool to represent your smaller nations, and if we all come together we can do great things.”
“To connect with your culture and your roots is to be at one with yourself. You can’t know where you’re going, if you don’t know who you are and where you’ve come from.”

Niall was selected as captain and lined up at centre in Fetu Samoa’s 14 point victory against Fiji Bulikula in the first round of the 2023 Women’s Pacific Championships.
For Niall, representing Samoa allowed her to carry the pride of her community onto the international stage and play not just for herself, but for something bigger. Her decision sends a powerful message: your story matters. Your background matters. Your culture matters. And when athletes feel grounded in who they are, they play with a different kind of strength.
