Sharing the load | ‘Stressful time’ drives Burns to lift his game

Billy Burns takes on Dogging Course

Billy Burns knows just how quickly a rugby league career can change.

After experiencing the uncertainty of life without an NRL contract, the Cronulla Sharks forward has made it a priority to prepare for whatever comes next, recently completing a dogging course through Licences 4 Work alongside teammates Jayden Berrell, Blake Hosking and Michael Gabriel. The course covered everything from calculating load weights and safely attaching heavy loads to a crane, to communicating with crane operators using hand signals, whistles and two-way radios.

"We've had to memorise different whistle commands, hand signals and radio communication. It's all about making sure everyone understands what's happening so the job can be done safely."

While it's a world away from the football field, Burns knows gaining practical qualifications will help lighten the load when his playing days eventually come to an end.

"I went through a period where I didn't really have a contract, and I realised the importance of having something after footy," Burns said.

"I was definitely stressed during that time. But now that I've done a few courses and picked up a few tickets, if I ever have a career-ending injury, or when I eventually retire, I've got something I can go straight into."

Normally completed across five consecutive days, the course was spread over several weeks to accommodate the Sharks' training schedule, allowing the players to balance their football commitments while developing new qualifications.

Sharks hooker Jayden Berrell strongly believes preparing for life after rugby league isn't something players should leave until retirement is on the horizon.

"Footy's such a small part of our life," he said.

"If you can build your skills up now, especially for younger players, and even for those getting towards the end of their careers, it gives you options.”

The initiative reflects a growing emphasis on helping athletes develop careers beyond their sport. While their focus remains firmly on performing for the Sharks, Burns, Berrell, Hosking and Gabriel are ensuring they're equally prepared for the day they hang up the boots.
