League Ahead is thrilled to announce the following speakers will be presenting ‘The Culture of Care: Psychological and Cultural Safety in Sport’ at the upcoming conference, The Culture of Wellbeing in Sport taking place on October 13 at Allianz Stadium.

Dr Amy Joscelyne

General Manager Mental Health & Wellbeing, League Ahead

  • Dr Amy Joscelyne is a clinical psychologist who works with athletes from a range of sports including Olympians and rugby league. Amy completed her PhD in 2013, which examined coping in the aftermath of natural disaster and conflict in Aceh, Indonesia. Amy later became the Research Director at the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture in New York City, during which time she worked on global mental health projects with Johns Hopkins University and the WHO. Amy returned to Australia and worked with Medecins Sans Frontieres and at the Black Dog Institute, while also founding her own private practice, which is where she found her love of working with athletes.

    Amy is the General Manager of Mental Health and Wellbeing at League Ahead and takes a player-centred approach while advocating for psychologically safe environments that enable athletes to thrive on and off the field.

Dr Clinton Schultz

Director of First Nations Strategy and

Partnerships, Head of First Nations

Research, Black Dog Institute

  • Associate Professor Clinton Schultz is a Gamilaraay man, father of three, and registered psychologist with more than 15 years’ experience in social and emotional wellbeing. Clinton has a keen interest in lore, culture, planetary health, and holistic wellness, particularly the wellbeing of workers in health and community services. Clinton obtained his PhD from the Griffith University School of Medicine, titled Winanga-li-gu (Higher order listening), Guwaa-li-gu (Higher order speaking), Maruma-li-gu (Higher order healing): Factors of holistic wellbeing for members of the Aboriginal health and community workforce.  Clinton received the award for academic excellence in a thesis from Griffith University for this work, previously been awarded IAHA Allied Health Professional of the year (2019), and Griffith University Indigenous Alumni of the year (2018). He is the Director of First Nations Strategy at the Black Dog Institute and a Senior Researcher with UNSW.’

Professor Jioji Ravulo

Professor and Chair of Social Work and Policy Studies in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work, and the Director of The University of Sydney Pacific Collective.

  • Professor Jioji Ravulo is Professor and Chair of Social Work and Policy Studies at The University of Sydney. Jioji’s research, writing and areas of interest include mental health and wellbeing, alcohol and other drugs, critical Whiteness and educational engagement. Jioji has worked across the National Rugby League (NRL) in various roles since 2010, including counselling support for player and their families. Jioji has been involved and invited to author over 100 publications, including peer reviewed journal articles, scholarly book chapters, research reports, and opinion pieces.

Courtney Humphreys

PhD Candidate, Southern Cross University

  • Courtney Humphreys is a researcher, educator and Psychological Safety & Human Systems Architect working at the intersection of psychological safety, psychosocial risk, belonging, mental health and performance. Her work is shaped by both research and lived experience, having spent a lifetime close to professional rugby league and the demands high-performance systems place on athletes, coaches, families and those who work within them.

    Courtney’s doctoral research is the first comprehensive whole-of-system empirical study of psychological safety in elite sport, drawing on players, coaches, performance staff and executives across the NRL and NRLW.

    Courtney’s work focuses on how organisations can design environments that translate pressure into development and performance rather than unnecessary harm, creating the conditions with the potential to maximise individual, team and organisational performance.
